How Can I Support Missionaries?

Wow, we have “Christmas in October” at our church. Now before some of you think that we’ve joined the advertising world and are marketing Christmas materials like many of the stores you may frequent, let me say that our “Christmas in October” is about raising funds for the kids of missionaries. That’s right; we raise money to give to the children of the missionaries on the Mission field because we realize that it’s not only the adults who are making sacrifices to serve God in a foreign field, but also their children. And in some cases the sacrifices these children make may be greatest. Therefore, let me encourage you to give to this important fund at our church and also suggest a few other ways by which you can support our missionaries who are serving the Lord faithfully in foreign countries.

  • Adopt a missionary or missionary family. Instead of praying for missionaries in general, adopt a missionary or missionary family and begin to read their newsletter, correspond with them and pray specifically for their needs.Write letters and send e-mails of encouragement to the missionary or missionary family you decided to adopt. Please note that missionaries are often busy and may not be able to respond to you, but I do believe your words of encouragement will be much appreciated.
  • Send them a care package. In addition to sending materials for the missionaries themselves, you may also want to send them materials that they will be able to use in their ministries like Birthday Cards, Special Occasion Cards, Children Ministry prizes, etc. I know that these and other materials that we can purchase here in the United States so freely can benefit their ministries. (Please note that it would be best to ask the missionary what they can use.)
  • Help financially support your adopted missionary or missionary family. If you feel led to adopt a missionary or missionary family, you can help them by donating financially to their ministry. The financial burdens on many of the missionaries that we support are heavy because we tend to help finance those that to Japan. (Please note that you can donate to our Missions Fund.)
  • As mentioned above, pray specifically for the needs of your adopted missionary or missionary family.

I know that some of you in our church have already adopted missionaries and missionary families; I also realize that some of the small groups in our church have already adopted missionary families as well. Please let me encourage you to keep up your good work and to let you know that your work is not in vain. For those of you thinking about it, let me encourage you to adopt a missionary or missionary family. It’s a lot easier to pray for and support a missionary or missionary family when you begin to know them personally. This is one way that we can join in and help carry out the Great Commandment (Matthew 28:16-20).
